Deep Well Pump Replacement

Deep well pumps also known as ‘Submersible’ pumps use a pressure tank that draws water along a single pipe that is connecting the well and the home. These pumps are installed below the waterline in the well. So because they are underground and underwater, must be pulled from the well if there is any kind of repairs that is needed to done. They actually have fewer problems than the type of pumps that are used for shallow wells (Jet pump).

How to complete a well pump replacement and repairs?

  • The deep well (submersible) pump must be removed from the well before it can be repaired.
  • Turn off the power and disconnect switch. Remove the well cap, disconnect the pit less adapter and pull up the pipe, electric cable and pump and any piping associated to it from the well.
  • Visually inspect the pump and then carry out electrical and mechanical tests to find which particular component of the pump is damaged.
  • In a situation where you notice that the pump is dry, it means the pump is actually not well submerged into the well. You will need to add pipe to place the pump deeper into the well.
  • If the mechanical damage is caused by debris in the well, that kind of damage can be fixed by replacing the casing of the pump. And in case if the tail pipe is clogged with debris, it can be freed.
  • In situation whereby the problem is with the impeller. Use a screwdriver to turn the motor to be sure if the impeller turns freely. If that does not happen, open the case of the impeller and remove any form of obstructions. Also check the impeller for cracks if there is any damage to the impeller itself, the whole impeller unit should be replaced.
  • Remove the electric motor cover from where the cable enters the motor. One of the cable wires is connected to the starting capacitor. If when testing the multi-meter and the needle does not jump, or if the meter reads zero resistance, the capacitor itself must be replaced.
  • After all the testing has been done, reassemble the repaired unit and lower the pump and its accompanying pipe back into the well. Ensure the pit-less adapter engages when the pump is in position.

ACS Irrigation encourages that to always work with an experienced well pump service technicians as you will be working with high voltage ac 120 or 220 volts with 15 to 30 amps – dangerous and lethal.
